Utilities in Student Accommodation: Electricity, Water and Internet

By UniRooms Team•Updated September 22, 2026•2 min read

Utilities cause more housemate arguments than almost anything else. A few questions before you move in, and a simple agreement with roommates, will save you money and stress all year.

Electricity

Many student rooms use prepaid meters, often shared between several rooms. Ask whether electricity is included, whether the meter is shared and how top-ups are split. Fans, fridges and especially AC and electric cookers increase usage a lot, so agree fair rules with roommates early.

Water

Check whether water is included, how it's supplied (mains, tank, borehole or delivery) and what happens when supply is interrupted. A storage tank makes a big difference during shortages.

Internet

Some hostels include Wi-Fi; many students rely on mobile data. Ask about Wi-Fi speed and reliability, and test your network's signal in the actual room during the viewing.

Splitting shared costs

Agree up front how shared bills are split (equally, or by appliances used) and who buys the top-ups. Keep a simple record in a group chat so nobody feels cheated.

Get it in writing

Whatever the arrangement, have the owner confirm in writing which utilities are included in the rent. It avoids surprises halfway through the semester.

Ask about utilities at every viewing and compare total cost, not just rent. On UniRooms, check each listing's amenities and ask the owner what's included before you commit.
