UniRooms does not collect rent or deposits. Housing agreements and payments are handled directly between students and accommodation providers.
Getting Started
What is UniRooms?
UniRooms helps university students in Ghana find hostels, homestels and rooms near campus, and helps owners reach those students. We currently cover the University of Ghana (Legon), KNUST, the University of Cape Coast and UPSA.
Is UniRooms free?
Yes. Searching, saving rooms and messaging owners is free for students, and listing rooms is free for owners. UniRooms never collects rent or deposits and never takes a cut of an owner's rent.
How do I create an account?
Tap Sign up and continue with Google or Apple. Everyone starts with one UniRooms account. Students can start searching straight away; if you let rooms, request owner access from the same account.
My campus isn't listed. What can I do?
We open campuses one at a time. Use Request campus coverage to tell us your school and area. Requests from students and owners help us decide where to go next, and our team will contact you when it opens.
Finding Accommodation
How do I search for a room?
Start from your campus page or the Search page. Filter by campus, area, room type (1-in-1 to 4-in-1) and budget, then sort by newest or price. Open a listing to see photos, what the price includes, house rules and when the owner last confirmed it's available.
Are prices per month or per academic year?
Each listing shows its price period. Most hostels near campus charge per bed for the academic year; some private rooms charge monthly but ask for several months up front. Compare the full yearly cost, including utilities and transport.
How do I contact an owner or arrange a viewing?
Sign in, open the listing and choose Message owner or Request viewing. Keep early conversations on UniRooms so there's a record if you need help from our support team.
Can I save rooms and get alerts?
Yes. Tap the heart on any listing to save it; your saved rooms are under Saved. To hear about new rooms, set a room alert with your campus, room type and budget.
Can I book or pay for a room on UniRooms?
No. UniRooms is for finding rooms and contacting owners. You agree terms and pay the owner or hostel directly, after you've viewed the room. Always ask for a receipt.
Trust & Verification
Are listings checked before they appear?
Yes. Every listing goes through our safety checks before it goes live, and our team reviews any listing that doesn't pass them. Listings that break our rules or get credible reports can be hidden or removed.
What does the Verified owner badge mean?
It means the owner's details have passed UniRooms review. It's a useful signal when deciding who to contact first, but it isn't a guarantee: always view the room and confirm the terms yourself.
What does 'Owner confirmed available' mean?
Owners regularly confirm that rooms are still available. The date shows how recently they did. A recent confirmation means you're less likely to chase a room that's already taken.
Payments & Your Rights
How much advance rent can a landlord ask for?
Ghana's Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220) caps advance rent for residential premises at six months, although many hostels and landlords still ask for a full year or more. If you're pressured into terms you think are unfair, the Rent Control Department can advise. This is general information, not legal advice.
Should I get a receipt?
Always. Landlords must give a written receipt for every rent payment, whether by cash, bank transfer or mobile money. It should show the amount, the period covered and who received it.
Where can I get help with a rent dispute?
The Rent Control Department (Ministry of Works and Housing) handles complaints about advance rent, receipts, maintenance and evictions, at its offices or through its online complaints portal. If a UniRooms listing is involved, also report it from the listing page.
Safety & Security
How do I avoid housing scams?
Never pay before you've viewed the room, or had someone you trust view it for you. Be wary of prices far below similar rooms, requests to send mobile money to a personal number to 'hold' a room, and anyone who refuses a viewing or rushes you. If something feels off, stop and report it.
How do I report a listing or a user?
Use the Report button on the listing. In the UniRooms mobile app you can also report or block someone from a conversation. For anything else, such as harassment or discrimination, use the contact form. Our team reviews every report.
Is my personal information safe?
We protect your data with encryption and access controls and use it only as described in our privacy policy. Some trusted service providers (for example, hosting and analytics) process data on our behalf. We don't sell your personal data, and optional analytics only run if you accept them in cookie settings.
Listing Properties
How do I list my rooms?
Sign up (or sign in) and request owner access. You can add your rooms as a draft straight away, including photos, price, room types, amenities, availability and house rules. Your listing is published once your owner account and the listing have been reviewed.
Does it cost anything to list?
No. Listing is free, and you collect rent directly from your tenants. UniRooms never takes a percentage of your rent.
How do I get the Verified owner badge?
Submit your verification details from the owner dashboard. The badge appears on your listings once they pass review.
What makes a listing get more enquiries?
Clear daylight photos of the actual rooms, the exact price and what it includes, the area and a landmark, quick replies, and keeping availability up to date. Confirm availability when we ask and mark rooms as rented when they're taken.
Can I edit my listing after it's published?
Yes, from your owner dashboard. Most changes appear straight away; significant changes such as a big price change may be reviewed again before they show.
Account & Profile
How do I reset my password?
UniRooms has no passwords any more. Sign in with Google, Apple or a passkey. If you used an email and password before, choose Google with the same email and it opens your existing account.
How do I update my profile?
Open your dashboard and go to Profile or Settings to update your name, phone number, campus and preferences.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings and choose Delete account. Deletion is permanent and removes your saved rooms, messages and any listings. Contact support if you need help.
Technical Issues
The site isn't loading properly. What should I do?
Check your connection, refresh the page, then try signing out and back in or using another browser. If it still doesn't work, contact support and tell us what you were doing and which phone or browser you use.
I didn't get a verification email.
You don't need one. UniRooms has no passwords any more: you sign in with Google, Apple or a passkey, and Google and Apple have already confirmed your email. If you can't get in, contact support.
Can I use UniRooms on my phone?
Yes. UniRooms is built for phones. You can use it in your browser or add it to your home screen: on Android use Chrome's Install or Add to Home screen option; on iPhone open it in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Campus Areas
Which areas do students live in near each campus?
Near UG Legon: East Legon, North Legon, Madina and Haatso. Near KNUST: Ayeduase, Bomso and Kentinkrono. Near UCC: Kwaprow, Amamoma and Pedu. Near UPSA: Madina and East Legon. Each campus page links to area pages with local tips.
How much does student accommodation cost?
It depends on the campus, area and room type. As a guide, news reports for 2026/27 put private hostel beds around Legon from roughly GH₵7,600 a year for a 4-in-1 to GH₵13,000–21,000+ for a 2-in-1 or single. Check current listings for your area.
When is the best time to look?
Six to eight weeks before your semester starts. Rooms near campus go quickly in the weeks before reopening, so set a room alert early.
